At 95 years old, Apolonio Navarro Valverde is the father of 6 sons and 3 daughters, all of whom are part of Coffee Nace. The name “Nace” is derived from the first two letters of his last names: Navarro and Ceciliano.
The Caturra variety, known for its compact form, is a natural mutation of Bourbon. It was first discovered in Minas Gerais, Brazil, around 1915. This mutation in a single Bourbon gene resulted in a smaller plant with high yield potential. As it spread, Caturra allowed for higher-density coffee cultivation.
As a direct descendant of Bourbon, Caturra is celebrated for its delicate and complex flavors, often with floral and fruity notes. However, its close relationship with Bourbon also makes it highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust and other common coffee diseases and pests. To address this vulnerability, Caturra was later crossed with rust-resistant hybrids from Timor, leading to the development of Catimor and its subsequent varieties.
