The Karimikui farm is located in Ngairiama, within the Gichugu division of Kirinyaga District, Central Province. It is one of three farms that make up the Rungeto Farmers Coop Society, alongside Kiangoi and Kii.
Founded in 1953, the Rungeto Farmers Coop Society has grown to include approximately 3,507 members. Each smallholder farmer cultivates about one hectare of land for coffee, alongside vegetables that help sustain their families.
The region surrounding the Karimikui factory is known for its fertile, nutrient-rich red volcanic soil, providing an ideal foundation for coffee cultivation. Altitudes range from 1,700 to 1,900 meters above sea level, ensuring optimal growing conditions. Additionally, the area receives annual rainfall between 1,600 and 1,900 mm, further reinforcing the favorable environment for coffee development.
The combination of fertile soils, high altitude, and abundant rainfall contributes to the unique terroir of Karimikui factory coffee, defining its distinctive flavors and characteristics. The smallholder farmers who are part of the cooperative take pride in their meticulous farming practices, leveraging the region’s natural resources to produce exceptional coffees.
