Kenya Gikirima
We bring you this spectacular coffee from the slopes of Mount Kenya, in the Kirinyaga region. Grown at an altitude of 1,900 meters, with fertile volcanic soils and a temperate climate featuring regular rainfall, the conditions are perfect for each coffee cherry to ripen slowly and develop its full richness of flavor. It comes from small plots owned by local farmers, who dedicate themselves to growing renowned Kenyan varieties such as SL28, Ruiru 11, and Batian, combining tradition with artisanal care.
After harvesting, the ripe cherries are taken to the Washed station, where they are processed using the Washed method, typical of Kenya. The coffee is then fermented overnight to allow for the natural breakdown of sugars, carefully washed, and soaked in clean water before being spread out on raised drying beds. Drying, which can take between 7 and 15 days depending on the weather and the volume processed, is carried out with frequent turning and sorting to ensure consistent quality. This meticulous process guarantees a clean, bright, and elegant cup, while respecting the personality of each bean.
In the cup, this coffee surprises with its natural sweetness, featuring notes of dulce de leche and sugarcane, accompanied by delicate floral undertones. Its balanced acidity and silky texture make every sip smooth, harmonious, and memorable.
This coffee reflects not only the region and its natural bounty, but also the dedication of hundreds of small-scale farmers who work every day to produce a high-quality coffee full of character and charm. Savoring it brings you a little closer to Kenya—its mountains, its people, and their passion for coffee.
In addition, environmental management is a priority at Gikirima. Wastewater from the pulping process is treated using soaking pits, thereby preventing contamination of nearby water sources. Currently, the station has five pits dedicated to this process. Furthermore, the cooperative enforces strict quality controls through a field committee responsible for providing technical assistance to farmers. This committee organizes field days to oversee practices such as pruning, weeding, fertilization, pest control, mulching, and seed selection, as well as to encourage producers to maintain and improve their coffee plantations, thereby ensuring the consistency and prestige of Gikirima coffee.
