Okoluu Guji, Ethiopia
The Okoluu Farmers Group is made up of 33 smallholders who grow coffee at exceptional altitudes of between 2,000 and 2,150 meters above sea level in the Guji region of Ethiopia. Each farmer works on farms of approximately 2 hectares, with young coffee trees between 1 and 7 years old.
Producers are gradually incorporating more disease-resistant and higher-yielding varieties, driving the modernization and sustainability of their agricultural practices. All the farms that make up this lot are certified organic.
In Guji, farming methods remain largely traditional. It is common for coffee trees to be intercropped with food crops, a practice typical of smallholder farmers that optimizes land use and contributes to the food security of their families.
Harvesting is done manually and selectively, ensuring that only cherries at their optimal ripeness are picked. The cherries are then sun-dried on raised beds, where they are turned regularly to ensure even drying. This natural process takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
