Mother Earth Women
Behind this Rainforest Alliance-certified organic coffee are 125 women coffee farmers from Jinotega, Nicaragua. As members of Aldea Global’s Tierra Madre program, they receive an additional premium from the sale of their coffee, which helps them obtain title to their land. The unique flavor of this coffee reflects the fertility of the volcanic soil and the region’s tropical climate.
Today, Nicaragua relies on coffee as its main export. Coffee production generates more than $500 million in annual exports and provides more than 200,000 jobs. Approximately 40,000 farmers and their families rely primarily on the income they earn from growing coffee. These smallholder farmers typically grow coffee in semi-forest environments that contribute to the conservation of endangered forests and threatened species.
Many coffee producers in Nicaragua now benefit from cooperatives that provide them with a wide range of services, support, and opportunities. As seen in the success of“El Acuerdo de las Tunas,”where 3,000 landless workers secured land rights, collective action by farmers can be far more effective in bringing about widespread change than the defense of individual interests.
