In central Tanzania, the Kilombero Valley borders the Udzungwa Mountain National Park. The soil and genetics of central Tanzania have the potential to produce very good cacao . However, for many years now, Tanzanian cacao has been sold to larger exporters.
Now, thanks to Kokoa Kamili's quality approach, a better product is being produced at a better price. This substantially improves family incomes and the standard of living of local farmers. Farmers in Kilombero have been practicing organic farming for generations, by default.
cacao is grown in small-scale agroforestry, interspersed with bananas, corn and shade trees. Harvesting is done manually, and the beans are fermented for 6 days in wooden boxes, then dried in the sun on African beds.
