Wanale Coffee

Wanale Coffee takes its name from the majestic peak that overlooks the city of Mbale in the Mount Elgon region, a natural gathering point for coffees from the surrounding communities.

This coffee is grown at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,600 meters above sea level and comes from various areas of Mount Elgon,

At the source, the work is organized through lead farmers—trained producers who oversee key processes such as pulping, fermentation, and drying. These farmers not only produce coffee but also serve as a point of connection within their communities, purchasing coffee cherries or parchment locally and helping to maintain quality control from the source. Each season, they receive training in quality assessment and benefit from a financial incentive system that rewards consistency and good agricultural practices.

The coffee is delivered in parchment form, typically with a moisture content between 13 and 15 percent. At The Coffee Yard, each lot is first evaluated through physical analysis and cupping, selecting only those that match the desired quality profiles. The coffee then undergoes an additional process of drying, sorting, and further cupping before final hulling, ensuring consistency and cleanliness in the cup.

In the foothills of Mount Elgon, on the plains leading up to the mountains, Norman Mukuru—a professional with decades of experience in specialty coffee—founded The Coffee Yard, a drying center renowned for its work with high-quality natural coffees and profiles tailored to the needs of different customers.

In terms of impact and transparency, all producers are registered in The Coffee Yard’s system and are part of an organized network of leading farmers and purchasing agents. Traceability data is collected to ensure compliance with international regulations such as the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation. In addition, in recent years, the team has worked to provide ongoing training to producers to help them meet recognized standards such as those of the Rainforest Alliance, thereby strengthening quality, sustainability, and transparency throughout the supply chain.
